Meet Thom
Thom completed his B.S. from Cornell University in 1978, his M.B.A. from the University of Central Florida in 1986 and his ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) from The American College in 2003. With over 20 years financial industry experience, Thom's skill-set has steadily matured and provides Thom with the unique ability to serve as his client's personal Financial Consultant and Fiduciary.
Thom began his financial industry career with MetLife in 1988 and served as both a Registered Representative and Associate Branch Manager. In 1997, Thom joined John Hancock Financial Services and expanded into the small business and retirement markets with products and services such as Group Health/Savings Plans, Long Term Care Insurance, Variable Investments and Estate Planning.
In 2006 Thom left John Hancock to pursue his goal of becoming an independent financial advisor. For Securities, Thom chose to partner with Centaurus Financial, Inc., a true independent Broker/Dealer based in Anaheim, California. Unlike big-brand, insurance-based Broker/Dealers, Centaurus does not manufacture any products nor does it have any proprietary mutual funds, annuities or insurance policies. Rather, Centaurus serves as Thom's back-office for securities due diligence and provides Thom with cutting edge investment opportunities and money management platforms along with financial planning and advisory strategies.
In 2010, Thom became the President of the Williamsburg Chapter of the National Association of Financial Advisors. NAIFA provides its members within the financial services industry with professional and career guidance along with continuing education courses. Thom is also a member of the Williamsburg Kiwanis, a non-profit, community-based, service organization that provides direct suport for children and children's charities, especially at-risk children, throughout the greater Williamsburg-James City County area .
You can count on a ChFC®'s
As a Chartered Financial Consultant®, Thom has completed the most extensive educational program required for any financial services credential. Each ChFC® has taken at least eight college-level courses on all aspects of financial planning from The American College, a non-profit educator with the highest level of academic accreditation.
The average study time for the program is over 400 hours, and advisors frequently spend years earning this coveted distinction. Each ChFC® must also complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education every two years and must meet extensive experience requirements to ensure that you get the professional financial advice you need.
How can a ChFC® help you?
Here are just a few of the many areas where a ChFC® can assist you:
- Creating a comprehensive financial approach
- Protecting your assets and managing risk with appropriate levels of insurance
- Managing taxes better for you and your business
- Helping you secure your retirement
- Building an investment approach to help you reach your goals
- Enhancing the value of your estate to take care of your loved ones
You can count on a ChFC®'s integrity.
Advisors with the ChFC® designation are required to serve you with the highest level of professionalism. The authority to use the ChFC® mark is granted by the Certification Committee of the Board of Trustees of The American College, and that privilege is contingent on adherence to strict ethical guidelines. All ChFC® advisors are required to do the same for clients that they would do for themselves in similar circumstances, the standard of ethical behavior most beneficial for their clients.
Current candidates for the ChFC® designation must complete a minimum of nine courses and 18 hours of supervised examinations. They must also fulfill stringent experience and ethics requirements. Over 48,000 individuals have been awarded the ChFC® designation since its inception in 1982 and the credential is widely regarded as the highest standard of knowledge and trust for financial planning professionals.
The ChFC® program prepares professionals to meet the advanced financial needs of individuals, families and small-business owners. ChFC®'s can identify and establish specific goals and then formulate, implement and monitor a comprehensive plan to achieve those goals. Individuals who earn a ChFC® can provide expert advice on a broad range of financial topics including financial planning, wealth accumulation and estate planning, income taxation, life and health insurance, business taxation and planning, investments and retirement planning.
